  • How can human rights defenders use various methods to better collect and verify information at borders, including by using new technologies?

The training is based on interactive learning methods and requires full-time presence and a high level of active participation. Participants should be aware that they will be unable to perform other work-related activities during the training sessions. The course will be conducted in English by experienced trainers with proven gender and cultural sensitivity. The costs of training materials, travel and full board accommodation are covered by ODIHR.

How to register

Twenty-five participants will be selected, in a competitive process, according to the following criteria:

  • Proven experience and high motivation to carry out human rights-related activities in the migration and refugee context;
  • Experience with monitoring and/or analysing the human rights implications of technologies used in border control, asylum and migration management (surveillance, biometrics, automated decision-making, at borders, in refugee camps and/or in immigration detention) is an advantage.
  • Willingness to use various methods, including new technologies, to collect and verify information for human right monitoring at borders;
  • Relevance of the training for applicants’ current and potential future human rights activities in the region and readiness to put the obtained knowledge into practice;

Human rights defenders carry out their human rights activities individually or jointly with others, as part of an informal group or as a non-governmental organization, and act in a voluntary or professional capacity. The key characteristic that defines human rights defenders is not who they are, but what they do and the principles they stand for.

Applicants should complete the application form and upload their CV (PDF or DOC) by 24 May 2024. ODIHR will strive to ensure a geographical and gender balance among participants. By 31 May 2024, successful candidates (only) will be informed about the outcome of the selection process.

This course will promote understanding of the principal determinants of disasters and provide an evidence-based approach to the interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral frameworks required to efficiently and effectively manage humanitarian disasters. It will cover key concepts in disaster management policy and practice, including hazard risk, vulnerability, resilience, and governance through the cycle of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and early recovery. It will also integrate epidemiology, health economics, and public administration into the disaster management mix for the first time. Using case studies of recent humanitarian crises, students will have a more complete understanding of the direct and indirect drivers of disaster risk and how they interact, enabling them to think critically about the appropriate allocation and management of resources in times of crisis.

Water is the lifeblood of the earth and is central to the entire SDGs. Agriculture also accounts for 72% of global freshwater withdrawals and is the world’s largest water user. As the global population grows, global demand of water is also projected to increase to feed the population.

However, we are facing a global water crisis. Worldwide, countries are experiencing water scarcity, droughts and or floods, aggravated by climate change, while at the same time water quality is deteriorating.

“Water resources management for the four betters: better production, better nutrition, better environment and better life, to achieve Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals” has been selected as the biennial theme for 2024-2025 during the FAO Conference held beginning of July 2023, highlighting the crucial importance of water to achieve the SDGs.

Together with journalist Ms Hiroko Kuniya, FAO National Goodwill Ambassador for Japan, along with experts, this online seminar will explore the challenges of limited water resources and global agrifood systems.

The keynote presentation by FAO will share the organization's latest global data and knowledge and will introduce the current state of global water issues, the impact on agrifood systems and solutions which FAO promotes. During the panel discussion, experts will exchange opinions and discuss the current situation of water shortages, why climate change is related to water shortages and the impact on Japan, a food import dependent country.

Harvard Humanitarian Initiative's Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course

Fri, 10 May 2024 02:46:50 +0000

Country: United States of America
Organization: Harvard University
Start date: 16 Jul 2024
End date: 19 Jul 2024
Registration deadline: 12 Jul 2024

We are excited to announce that the Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course (UHEC) will be offered this year in July 2024! The workshop will run from July 16th to July 19th, 2024. The course will be held in Cambridge, MA.

Overview

Humanitarian organizations, international agencies and governments serving populations affected by crises increasingly find themselves working in urban settings. Agencies face new challenges and some potential advantages in these complex urban environments and are only just learning how to approach them. These new challenges take many forms: complicated physical layouts, unprepared institutions and infrastructure, and mixed target populations of refugees and underserved locals. Furthermore, the difficulty in NGO coordination with uniquely urban communities as well as local authorities calls for urgent education and training in urban crises.

The Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course is a four-day course organized by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative via its Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative to train humanitarian professionals on current issues and best practices involved in this ever-expanding and unique area of research and practice. The course faculty is experienced in humanitarian training with on-the-ground experience with humanitarian crises in urban areas.

Walking Activity: The first day of the workshop includes a walking activity in the city of Boston, in which participants will walk to and examine various urban features and vulnerabilities of the city. Participants will be expected to walk several miles over the course of the day. Please let us know if this presents an issue.

Classes will be held in English. To successfully participate in the course, we recommend that participants have at least a B2 English language level (CEFR).

How to register

The course will run from July 16th to July 19th, 2024. It will be held in Cambridge, MA. Please follow the link below to register for the course. We look forward to seeing you in July.
